What does it mean to have varicose veins or spider veins?

Healthy, well-functioning veins carry blood from the limbs to the heart. But for reasons including age, weight gain, stress, pregnancy and heredity, veins sometimes begin to malfunction in a condition called “venous reflux.” This happens when the valves that are supposed to pump blood smoothly through the veins weaken or fail, at which point instead of moving along steadily, the blood in your veins slows, stops or even reverses course, leading to the condition called varicose veins.

Do any of these symptoms sound familiar?

  • Bulging, ropy or knotty leg veins visible from the surface of the skin
  • Leg veins with a blue, purple or dark-red discoloration
  • Legs that throb, burn or itch
  • Aching or fatigue in the legs when you try to walk short distances
  • Legs that twitch (“restless leg syndrome”) when you are lying down at night

All of these are symptoms of varicose veins. It is the pooling or reversal of blood flow that causes these symptoms in your problem veins.

Spider veins generally do not have the prominent physical symptoms as varicose veins. While they do not usually cause physical discomfort, many people find their roadmap-like or cobwebby appearance close to the surface of the skin on the head, chest, arms, legs or face to be displeasing.

Whether you have varicose veins, spider veins, or other vein problems, Dr. Locastro and the rest of his medical team can help identify the best vein treatment for you. If you are a patient in Syracuse, Rochester, Utica, Auburn, the Finger Lakes region, Cortland, Ithaca, Binghamton, Albany, Schenectady, or Troy, you can begin getting relief from vein problems right away by contacting Total Vein Treatment Center.
